IP Protection and Innovation in China: A Look Backward and Forward

AmCham-China, USITO, the US Chamber, the European Chamber, and RDPAC invite you to attend the third breakfast of a series on innovation issues in China. This breakfast will take place Tuesday, February 15, 2011 at the Capital Club in Beijing from 8:00 – 10:30 AM. The topic is: “IP Protection and Innovation: A Look Backward and Forward.” These are informal, strictly “off the record” discussions with leading government officials, businesses, academics and consultants on a range of innovation-related issues. The intention of this program is to provide a forum for constructive, open and fact-driven discussions on innovation-related topics.
Our roundtable panelists come from a diverse background in both the public and private sector. The following speakers will be presenting and available for a Q&A session:

Tony Chen (Partner, Intellectual Property, Jones Day) –will discuss IP litigation and trends in IP litigation in the pharmaceutical industry

Matthew Chervenak (Founder and President, General Biologic) –will discuss trends in IP litigation and research from the General Biologic database (if you would like special access to General Biologic’s database SOURCE Legal, please email jhowe@amchamchina.org with your name, company, title and email address, and you will receive a temporary username and password)

Yang Guohua (Deputy Director-General, Ministry of Commerce) -will introduce the six month campaign and its relationship to China’s innovation efforts

Tim Smith (Deputy International Service Head, Rouse) –will introduce the CIELA database, and what it shows about trends in IP enforcement in technology-intensive industries (to access CIELA’s database, please visit www.ciela.cn)

Zhang Yan (Senior Counsel, Intellectual Property Law, IBM) –will discuss trends in patent litigation, especially with regard to utility models and design patents

(invited) Supreme People’s Court, IP Division –will discuss 2010 Judicial Efforts on Innovation and IP

(invited) State Intellectual Property Office, Law and Treaties –will discuss research exemptions for patents and innovation in China
Mark Cohen, Director of International Intellectual Property Rights for Microsoft, will moderate this breakfast session.
